If you are travelling three (or four with reasonably small luggage) you may think of a car as then the price does not differ much from the minivan/bus tickets.
You gain comfort, speed and the freedom to stop whenever you feel so or want to see something interesting on the way. A car for the day would cost you between 50–60 USD.

A (shared) minivan is another option how to get where you want to be. It is slightly more expensive than bus and a bit quicker, a lot cheaper than a car and a bit slower. For a trip from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville we opted for this type of transport. The price (9 USD pp) is acceptable.
The added bonus is a free wifi most of the time during the trip. Only when the van got out of mobile signal the wifi was of course lost. The departure time was delayed about an hour but the expected travel time (4 hours) was correct. When booking try to avoid the last row of seats. They are more narrow than the rest as they seat four persons instead of the three in the front rows.
There is not much more to add.
